Hi there!
I'm Lisa Falkson
I've been designing conversations between people and machines since the early 2000's. With over 20 years of industry and research experience, I specialize in the design, development and deployment of voice-first multimodal interfaces. My passion for delivering useful and delightful conversational experiences is grounded in deep technical knowledge of natural language understanding (NLU) and software. I have worked on projects ranging from IVRs to mobile apps to in-car infotainment and general purpose personal assistants like Alexa. Most recently, I led a team at Amazon doing the core CxD and UX work for Alexa+, the newly launched generative AI version of Alexa.

Multimodal Disambiguation
Customers placing calls through Alexa faced difficulties specifying which contact or device they wanted to reach. Rewriting the TTS and adding visuals to screen-based Echo devices increased task completion by 4%. This project led to a set of multimodal patterns for Echo Show devices.

Conversational Excellence
Generative AI set a new standard for conversational capabilities; Alexa+ needed to meet that standard. Initial feedback and metrics indicated it needed improvement across multiple areas: repetitiveness, verbosity, and over-apologizing. This project significantly improved these metrics using a new workflow between design, product, engineering and science.
